TIME AND TALENT

The time and talents of the members of Holy Cross are used to minister to the needs of the parish, neighborhood and the community.  The Time and Talent Committee is organized into five areas which are:

Parish Life

Ad Hoc committee plans and carries out building and renovation projects.

Oversees the maintenance of Holy Cross Cemetery.

Makes recommendations to the Parish Council concerning all matters of parish finance.

Grounds Committee - Paul Fitzgerald

Involves the supervision of the exterior conditions of the parish property, its maintenance and upkeep.

Serves refreshments in the Commons after Mass.

Parish receptions, Annual Picnic and Celebrations - Marie Anstey

Prayer Shawls - Rita Christian

Provides personal greeting to new parishioners and coordinates newcomers’ receptions.

Young at Heart - Celeste Costas

Seniors gather monthly for spiritual and social activities.

Shares faith, fellowship and fun with other young adults.

Plans fundraisers and projects to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the community.

Natural Family Planning - Brian and Laura Hall

Certified teachers from the Couple-to-Couple League provide instruction in the Church’s only approved method of family planning.

Quarterly publication describing parish activities.

Correlate the Prayers of the Faithful with the Sunday scriptures.

Facilitates Hispanic participation in our parish life.

Music Ministry

Brass, Woodwind Ensemble - Mike Logan

    Instrumental ensemble at the 6:00pm Sunday Mass.

Cantors - Dr. Rebecca McCord

Music leadership for Mass.  Special training is available from our Music Director.

Children's Choir - Dr. Rebecca McCord

Children’s choral program for ages 8-15.  Children will learn basic musicianship skills, how to participate in the singing of Mass, and prepare for four special performances during the liturgical year.   We rehearse biweekly on Thursday evening from 6:00-7:00.  Rehearsals are scheduled for Sept. 25, Oct. 9, Oct. 23, Nov. 6, Nov. 20, Dec. 4, and  Dec.  18, 2008.

Contemporary Music Group - Gerry Bianco

Voices and instruments make a joyful noise and lead Assembly in singing at Sunday 10:00 or 11:00 Mass and other parish celebrations. Weekly rehearsals at 7:30 Wednesdays.

Teen Band and Choir - Gerry Bianco

Grades 9-12 voices and instruments lead Assembly in singing at 6:00pm Sunday Mass.

Traditional Choir - Dr. Rebecca McCord

Open to all adults who enjoy singing in the traditional-style Mass and want to serve in music leadership.  Music reading is not required.  We rehearse each Thursday evening from 7:30-8:30 and sing on alternating Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings at Mass, as well as singing for Feast Days and Holy Days.

Provides transportation for parishioners to Mass, medical appointments, shopping.

Emergency Childcare

Provides childcare during family emergencies.

Take Communion to hospitalized parishioners.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist in Nursing Homes and to the Homebound - Ann Echols,

Take Communion to parishioners who are not able to come to Mass.

Friendship Visit to the Nursing Homes and Homebound - Ann Echols

Funeral Liturgy Planner - Marge Chamberlin

Assists families in planning funeral services.

Funeral Receptions - Marge Chamberlin

Prepares and serves receptions after funerals.

Hospital Follow-Up - Glenda Desmond

Call after parishioner is released from hospital to see if help is needed.

Medical Equipment for Parishioners - Paula Warwick

Organizes the medical equipment closet and arranges loans to parishioners.

Monthly Lunch after Late-Morning Mass - Anne Bragassa

Prepares and serves light lunch after Mass.

Nurses - Glenda Desmond

Take blood pressure after Mass, make home visits, organize annual Health Fair.

Parish Advocate for Disable Parishioners - Carole McCorkle

Helps parishioners with special needs

Phone-A-Friend - Joann Saari

Friendship phone calls.

Prayer Line - Mary Mugnolo

Organizes prayer petitions

Prepare-A-Meal - Joe Schill

Prepare and deliver home-cooked meals to meet short-term needs of ill parishioners.

Seasonal Food Baskets - Marge Chamberlin

Packs and delivers baskets to the needy at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Social Ministry Committee - Evelyn Monark

Coordinates charitable projects in the parish and the Lynchburg community.

Adult Care Center - Ann Echols

A comprehensive program that includes health, social and support services in a protected setting during daytime hours.

Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center - Trudy Keller

Enables women and girls to find themselves in a crisis pregnancy to choose life

Churches for Urban Ministry (CUM) - Evelyn Monark and Jim Clark

A group of downtown churches provides seasonal religious parties, tutorial programs for children and adults and assists with their summer Camp Timothy Program.

Daily Bread - Veronica Madden

Furnishes the hungry of the city with a meal seven days a week.

Food Pantry - Catherine Madden

Manages the Holy Cross food pantry.

Gateway-New Land Samaritan Inn - Rob Gray

A shelter for homeless males who are recovering alcoholics and substance users.

Habitat for Humanity - Phil and Carolyn Dellwo

Assists with the building of houses for low-income families.

Hurley, Virginia , Workweek - Clark Charlton

Repair projects in impoverished Appalachia.

Interfaith Outreach - Beverly Maslow

An interdenominational organization of sixty-two Catholic, Protestant and Jewish congregations who help with community needs.

Jesse Tree - Lynn Barber

Provides Christmas gifts and food to those in need.

Meals-On-Wheels - Veronica Madden

Volunteers deliver prepared meals to shut-ins.

Miriam’s House - Rhonda Ford

A transitional living program that provides food and shelter for homeless women and their children.

Neighborhood Outreach - Marie Bowen

People working together to rebuild our neighborhood.

Peace and Justice Advocacy - Joann Berrier and Ellen Nygaard

Educational and advocacy projects related to the Church’s teachings on social justice.

Rebuilding Together- Bill Long

A community-wide effort to improve neighborhood housing.

Red Cross Emergency Shelter - Glenda Desmond and Doug Eggleston

Holy Cross Church has been designated as an American Red Cross Emergency Shelter for the neighborhood in case of a disaster.

Respect Life

Works to ensure that the gift of human life and human dignity are not squandered through abortion, infanticide and euthanasia.

Rush Homes (not associated with Fr. Rush) - Evelyn Monark

Provides homes for the physically and mentally handicapped

St. Andrew’s Society - Jim Weigand

Volunteers work on distribution of crops to various food banks.

White Rock Hill Project - Bill Long

Renovates and sustains White Rock Hill Educational Center and supports programs

Christian Formation

Religious Education

Religious Education Committee - Linda Contreras and BethAnn Good

Creative planning of curriculum and programs and coordinating of special events for Pre-K through 12.

Adult Education - Joe Marotta

Contemporary study of Catholic Christian faith for adults.

Catechists - Linda Contreras

Pre-K through Grade 5: Catechists teach Sunday mornings at all grade levels for a yearlong commitment. Training and an annual retreat will be provided.

Middle and High School Formation/Youth Ministry: Adults work with adolescents by coordinating and teaching the Sunday Evening Teen Program.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word - Debbie Mutchler

Helps children with age-appropriate Scripture activities during the Readings and Homily.

Nursery/Child Care - Renee Naufel

Adult and teen volunteers care for children during Mass.

Summer Church Camp - Beth Ann Good

Adults and teens help with a weeklong adventure in June to make Bible stories come alive.

Little Rock Scripture Study - Pat Golden, and Patricia Wood

Weekly scripture study and prayer group.

Sacramental Preparation

Baptism - Helen Wheelock

Preparation of parents and godparents for the Sacrament of Baptism.

Reconciliation and First Communion - Linda Contreras

Two years of sacramental preparation, usually in grades 1 and 2.

Confirmation - Linda Contreras

Two years of sacramental preparation, usually in 10th and 11th grades.

Matrimony - Monsignor Rush

Meet with Pastor in preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

RCIA-Adults/ RCIC-Children - Joe Marotta, and Linda Contreras

The Rite of Christian Initiation is a year-long program for adults and children who wish to become members of the Catholic Church.
